Q1: Normally, Cortisol is present in the body at higher levels in the morning, and lowest at night – True/False
Answer: True
Cortisol levels regulate through a wide range throughout the day. Cortisol levels are normally at their highest when you wake up: Think about cortisol as your wake-up alarm. You will have higher stress levels in the morning to push you to get up and going. Cortisol levels fall as the day goes on and ends up being at its lowest around 12:00 AM. This process is called the diurnal rhythm. In the reverse, if you work at night and sleep during the day, this pattern is reversed.
Q2: Which of these organs is not part of the HPA axis?
Answer: Hippocampus
I tricked you guys on this one BIG TIME! Let us dive into this! The HPA axis is an abbreviation for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Looking at the name, the proof is in the pudding. The organs that are part of the HPA axis are the Hypothalamus, the Pituitary gland, and the Adrenal gland! Thus, the hippocampus is NOT an organ that is apart of the HPA axis. Q3: Name this Structure:
Answer: Cortisone
The answer to this question was Cortisone; however, many of you thought this was cortisol. Let's look at the similarities & differences between the two: Cortisol and Cortisone are both “steroids.” They share similar core structures which is common to all the cholesterol-like molecules. They comprise 4 fused carbon rings and have a very rigid structure. The difference between cortisol and cortisone lies in the difference between the functional groups present in the two molecules. Cortisol has a hydroxyl group attached to the 11th carbon of the steroid core carbon skeleton. Cortisone has a ketone group instead. When we look at the relationship between the two, we can say that Cortisone can be considered an active metabolite of cortisol by the catalyzed reaction of 11-beta-steroid dehydrogenase 2 and reversely by 11-beta steroid dehydrogenase type 1.

On Joey’s Supplement Lab video breaking down our newest product “Serenity,” Joey explains a study at the end of his video that shows the power of Quercetin. This study showed that in cell culture studies, Quercetin has shown to reduce the infectivity of target cells and replication against a wide variety of respiratory viruses: HSV-1, HSV-2, Adenoviruses, Coronavirus, Rhinovirus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome. This study also pointed out that overtraining and stressful exercise can increase susceptibility to HSV-1 and influenza infection. Cell culture studies have reported that quercetin can block viral replication of multiple viruses on The data in the study suggested that quercetin feedings can offset the exercise-induced stress, symptom severity, mortality in mice after intranasal inoculation with a standardized dose of influenza virus. This study also leans strongly towards the benefits of quercetin on susceptibility to infection in rested, non-stressed mice to be more effective in protecting the animals from infection than in mice with stress-induced exercise. Quercetin is also present inside of Serenity; Quercetin helps with the adaptation to the physiologic stress of repeated bouts of prolonged exercise; this action helps increase performance while exercising and helps increase stamina in athletes. Quercetin also possesses the ability to decrease cortisol levels by diminishing the HPA axis activation by the suppression of the CRF mRNA(Corticotropin Releasing Factor messenger Ribonucleic acid) expression.
